Disposing of Batteries

Many of us have had the frustrating moment when you go to change the channel and the remote control has stopped working. Suddenly you realise that it could be the batteries that need replacing; once you place the new ones into the remote, do you every wonder what to do with the old batteries?

Batteries are made up of heavy metals and toxic components, including alkaline, and mercury, so it’s incredibly important that they are correctly discarded to avoid any environmental issues from arising. For batteries that end up being disposed at landfill locations, this can have detrimental consequences to humans and animals. The only battery that is able to be recycled in Australia are those for vehicles. While a number of members from the battery industry have joined together to look at ways to ensure that all batteries are handled correctly; this is still an ongoing issue that continues to have a negative effect.

Even through batteries are recyclable, around 97% of them end up in landfill, which works out to be around 8000 tonnes every year. There are some ways in which we can decrease the number of batteries that make it to landfill sites; from reducing the batteries you purchase to only buying those that are rechargeable, if everyone of us altered our mindset with batteries, the world would certainly be a better and cleaner place.

Even though we live in a world that revolves around convenience, rechargeable batteries are simple to use. You can purchase battery chargers from your local hardware store for around thirty dollars, although that may seem excessive, you will save money in the long term.

If you seek further information regarding the disposal of batteries, or any other type of waste, contact your nearest rubbish removal business.

Cleaning Blinds the Right Way

Every now and again, blinds require a little touch up, as dust and other natural debris can create not only visually unappealing shades, but can also cause allergies to occur. We recommend maintaining all blinds frequently, as this will evade the need to clean vigorously.

Non Fabric Blinds

Before even picking up a cloth, we recommend dusting around the area to remove any disturbed dust, or if you have a small vacuum cleaner, that will also do the trick. To clean vertical blinds, you wipe from left to right, while horizontal ones need to be cleaned from the top to the bottom. We suggest you use a microfibre cloth combined with a bucket of warm water and a couple drops of washing liquid; then dip the cloth in, ensuring to wring all of the water out. There are some blinds that are flimsier than others so it’s important to take extra care with certain materials. Removing the dirt from edges can be tricky, however twisting the edge of the cloth and getting it into the corners is a way to remove stubborn dirt. Ensure you keep dipping the cloth into the warm water as this will ensure to keep your blinds clean.

Fabric Blinds

Cleaning fabric blinds requires more of an effort, as they are more prone to get dirty. You’ll notice over time that leaving the window open causes dirt to seep through, so it’s important to not close all windows when its raining or there are strong winds. First thing to do is eliminate the loose dirt by vacuuming the fabric blinds with a brush attachment. If you don’t have a brush, we recommend using a microfibre cloth to wipe the excess dirt. The next step is to soak a sponge in water and a little bit of soap, we must emphasise the word “little” as excessive amount of soap may damage the fabric. Wring the sponge and gently wipe or dab it on the fabric, depending on how much or how little is required. If too much moisture has seeped through, get a towel and dab it onto the affected areas.

If you’re fearful of trying to clean the shades yourself, contact a team of are experts.

Skip Bins are a wonderful way to eliminate rubbish once and for all, don’t put up with waste taking up precious place in your home. Having a home full of clutter can cause a range of problems, some can be minor others could have deadly consequences. A home that’s full of boxes and hallways filled with bits and pieces can cause injuries around the home, not to mention the fire hazard.

You’ll be amazed at the amount of unwanted goods that are able to fill a single skip bin. Remember those old doors you had replaced a couple of years ago that you thought would come in handy in the future? Get rid of them! They are only adding to the existing items that are sitting around your home or work.

It’s estimated that 400,000 Australians have a hoarding problem, the name given to people unable to throw away items because they have an attachment to the goods. Hiring a skip bin to clean out your home and eliminate everything takes a little bit of time; however you’ll feel much better knowing that your surroundings are clean, creating more space around your home.

Skip Bins are an excellent way to eliminate junk, once a bin is delivered to your property, there is no pressure to quickly fill it up. You can take your time to carefully sift through your belongings and decide what can be thrown away and what can be kept. The Dangers Of Not Cleaning Your Air Conditioner

Air conditioners are a wonderful invention, they cool us down when temperatures are at an extreme high, they also help maintain a consistency in the room to suit you and your family. There is nothing better than sitting on the couch with the air conditioner blaring through the family room, making you feel cool and eliminating that sticky feeling you may get on a scorching summers day.

As long as your air conditioner is properly looked after, some health problems can definitely be avoided. Air conditioners are made to release cool air that will gradually spread throughout your room, but it can also accumulate dust, dirt and allergenic particles, causing several allergies including asthma and allergies. This is one of the main reasons you must clean your air conditioner, as other more harmful diseases such as fungi, bacteria or even viruses can be even more hazardous to your health, bringing on all types of illnesses.

The most common form of disease that can be spread through dirty air conditioners is legionnaire’s disease, which is caused by legionella bacteria which lives in water. When small amounts of legionella are found, usually they are harmless, however when they grow in your air conditioning unit and multiply, that when it can be dangerous.

Water droplets that are contaminated can then be spread through the cooling system and can infect a whole building. You might receive some flu like symptoms, which can be deadly for approximately 10-15% of cases.

The best way to avoid any diseases from spreading is to make sure that your air conditioner is cleaned on a regular basis, particularly around the intakes and outlets where the majority of dust tends to accumulate. Getting a damp cloth and just wiping away the dust is a good way to eliminate dirt.

Generally most of the dust around and inside your air conditioner is visible to the naked eye; you can even use a duster to remove the dirt where the air is released. The best time to get your cooling system checked by a technician is during the colder months when your system isn’t getting used as much, as the inactivity can bring on the bacteria.

Floor Sanding

Floor sanding is an efficient and low cost way to ensure your floors go from looking old and dusty to looking clean and brand new. Having polished and restored floors brings a sparkle to your home, whether it is a newly built home or an older one.

Just like carpet that needs to be cleaned to ensure that bacteria and dust doesn’t spread, floorboard are similar ,and still need to be maintained, as sometimes dents can be caused by dropping items on the floorboards. Even though floorboards are much easier to uphold than carpet, they still need to be treated with care. After many years, floorboards start to look dirty, and the more foot traffic they receive, the more likely marks are expected to appear.

To ensure you receive the best possible job, make sure you hire an expert who is well versed in the area of floor sanding. Once all the sanding has been completed, wood sealers of the highest quality need to be used to ensure that the floor is kept in good condition, and that the floors shine will be preserved.

floor sanding 2

Floor sanding is known to be one of the most physically challenging home improvement tasks because of the long process involved in sanding and shinning the floors. This process takes many hours, depending on how large your floors are. All floor sanding is completed by using advanced sanding machines.

There are many benefits of having wooden floors, as well as it being more hygienic than carpet; they are also environmentally friendly, and most likely the wood on your floor came from warehouses and old structures.

Wood flooring looks elegant, lovely and adds value to your property. As well as giving your home a nice finish, if you suffer from allergies, solid flooring is best as it makes it difficult for dust and allergens to hide. Carpet stores bacteria, and unless you vacuum frequently, they will stay and cause your allergies to become worse.

8 Steps to a Cleaner Air Conditioner

When was the last time you had your air conditioner professionally cleaned?  If you can’t remember the answer is too long.

Even the most efficient cleaners and home owners forget about cleaning the inside of an air conditioning unit.  Experts recommend that air conditioning units of any make or model should be cleaned at least once every six months.  This stops a build-up of germs, stops leaks from happening and obliterates any weird smells.

FTXG-J 2010 Emura 5

Even if you air conditioner doesn’t smell, drip or look dirty it still needs cleaning to ensure it is running at maximum capacity with minimum power.  Don’t pay extra on your energy bills because of a dirty filter or clogged pipe!

For a more efficient air conditioner and to save time hire an air conditioning team to thoroughly clean it for you.  To save money and to keep your house cooler do the job yourself.

Here is a simplified step by step guide on how to clean your home air conditioner:

1.  Set aside an hour, that’s right cleaning you entire unit should only take an hour!  And buy cleaning supplies.

You will need:

  • A/C coil cleaner
  • Electric Motor Oil
  • Basic Household Cleaner
  • 4-in-1 screwdriver
  • Rags
  • Bleach
  • Funnel
  • Shop vacuum
  • Fine Comb
  • Gloves
  • Pipe cleaner

Now turn off the unit and you are ready to get started!

2. Adorn your gloves and remove the plastic filter, it should snap off, and slide off the wall.  (Be careful it’s heavy!)  If it is not sliding off check for case for screws which are usually located along the bottom edge.

3. Straighten any bent cooling fins with a fin comb then start cleaning!

4. Spray coils with your basic household cleaner and wipe clean with a rag.  Do the same to the fan blades.

5. Vacuum any excess dust or debris. If your motor has lubrication ports squeeze a few drops of motor oil into the oiling ports.

6. Check the air filters, if it is too soiled or has holes in it replace otherwise wash in the sink with regular soap, dry completely before returning to the unit.

7. Remove the condensation tube and check for any organic growths. As water passes through here it often becomes clogged with algae.  If there is any discoloration or a film has developed in the tube replace it or make a mixture of 1 part bleach to 16 parts water and funnel through the tube.  Do the same to any other pipe and tubes and clean with a small bristled brush.

8. Wait for all parts to dry, reassemble your air conditioner, wipe down the outside and plug the power back in.

Your air conditioner should now be quieter, smell better, not drip and blow cool air using less power.  Cleaning an air conditioner is easy but can be hard to do on your own.  If you don’t want to buy the products simply hire in an air conditioning company to do it.  Regardless which option you choose, for the health of your family and longevity of unit, don’t forget to clean the air conditioner!

If you do choose to hire a company to clean your air conditioner get them to clean all your other white goods too!  Most air conditioning companies such as Air Conditioning Liverpool by Appliance & Air Conditioning Services  offer cleaning and maintenance so can also clean dishwashers, washing machines, fridges and more!

Bond Cleaning Tips and Responsibilities

If you’re moving out of a rental property for the first time then it’s important that you understand what you need to do you get your bond back. One of the most important responsibilities you have as a tenant is to ensure the property is looking exactly how it did when you first moved in. However in some cases your property owner might be more pedantic than you think, which is why it’s good to aim to have the property looking better than when you first moved in. You don’t want to risk loosing out on the return of your bond, especially when it equates to about four weeks total rent.

When you’ve decided to begin with the packing up and cleaning there is a few choice to be made. Firstly you need to decide whether you’re going to hire a professional cleaner to undertake the work, or complete the cleaning yourself. In most cases people will hire a professional to be safe and to ensure the get their bond back.

Usually you’ll be advised that you need to have the property cleaned to ‘professional standards’ which means steam cleaning the carpets, scrubbing the toilet, scouring the shower, wiping the draws, making the fridge sparkle, depending on the size of the property it might be easier to hire a professional bond cleaner. If you feel as though you can handle it alone then there’s no reason you can’t just be prepared to use some elbow grease.

If you do choose to clean the property yourself then you should definitely complete some research and ensure that you have a well written checklist. It’s wise to speak with others who’ve moved out of rental properties to gain an understanding of what’s required and the processes employed by the professionals.

Areas You Should Focus:

Carpeted Areas:

One of the most important ares to clean when looking to get your bond money back is the carpet. Nothing is more obvious then carpet stains and discolouration, which is why you must ensure these areas of your property are sparkling new. Most experienced tenants will advise that you invest in a professional carpet cleaner, or  hire a steam cleaner. Vacuuming just wont cut it!

Walls and Doors:

You should ensure that you clean all walls and doors of the property. Cleaning walls can be done with sugar soap and sponge mop, but you must wipe of all dust before using any liquid solutions. You’ll usually be expected to ‘spot clean’ any marks on the walls a cover any nicks and dents

Another obvious part of the property to clean are the windows, you should ensure that you clean both the interior and exterior of all windows on the property. Regular window cleaning products and techniques will be appropriate but you need to make sure that you do a thorough job and think of the blinds or curtains as well.

Skirting Boards:

One of the things that may slip your mind without an appropriate checklist is the skirting boards of the property, make sure you provide them a wipe down to collect any dust that may have built up.  It wont take long but will be noticed if you forget.

Cupboards and Sinks:

Make sure you get a surface spray and get inside every crux of the cupboards to remove any grime, food or dust. You should also make sure you disinfect all sinks and wipe them all until they’re spotless. You don’t want to leave any food particles or dust that is highly unsanitary and leaves the house smelling.

Bathroom and Laundry:

Cleaning every bathroom and laundry crevice is of high importance as this is a sanitary requirement as well as an aesthetic element. You should use a good amount of disinfectant and toilet cleaning products to ensure that you’re not leaving a bad smell or grime. Ensure all grouting is looking in the best shape possible and the corners of the showers are mold free.

If you have a large outdoor area or live in a rural set up then you will need to spend a solid amount of time cleaning up the exterior. Not only should you complete exterior house washing, but you should clean up any items or junk lying on the ground or in the garden. Also make sure to clean up any green waste, do some weeding and give the area a good sweep.  The best way to dispose of green waste, landscaping rubbish and pavers is by hiring a skip bin.  Skip bins come in a range of sizes and are the perfect way to get rid of bulk waste at an affordable rate.

Garage and Shed:

You may be lucky enough to have a small garage with limited space to collect junk and mess, however a lot of tenants utilise this space for storage. If you’ve got lots of storage and items to clean from either your garage or shed then you also need to make sure that there isn’t any nasty stains, spiderwebs or general waste. Make sure you get some protective gloves on and begin to clean every aspect of this space. If you own a pressure washer then this is perfect for any outdoor floor and wall cleaning.

Moving Day

As you can see there are a lot of different things you need to remember when it comes to bond cleaning, and it’s important that you ensure you have completed all tasks on the general list provided to you by your landlord/property owner. If you think you may not be able to provide the ‘professional results’ required in this scenario then you can book in a professional to complete all the duties.  They are fast, affective, will bring all the cleaning products and are much cheaper than risking your bond.

Steam Cleaning VS Dry Carpet Cleaning

Is it time for your carpet to be revitalised?

Or perhaps you’ve got some nasty stains driving you completely mad?

When you’re looking at getting your carpets cleaned you’ll find that many companies boast their own techniques and equipment, making it hard to select the right cleaning method. You should always be wary of what any professional advises, especially if they have only one option for you.  It’s advised you get some accurate information by having a look at the various sources of information available, or by talking with a carpet cleaning company who offers a few different methods.

You’ll find that most carpet cleaning companies only utilise one method, usually steam cleaning, or dry cleaning.  Additionally some carpet cleaning companies will come up with their own name for their techniques, making it hard to decipher what you’re actually getting. However don’t allow this information to turn you against carpet cleaning companies, just make sure you do a little bit of research before asking for a specific carpet cleaning service.

Not surprisingly both popular carpet cleaning techniques are  effective in their own manner and in the right context, consequentially they also have their own negatives. It’s important you request a service that suits your circumstances (stains type, carpet material, time constraints and budget).

Steam Cleaning :

In basic terminology your steam cleaning service is the application of hot water onto your carpet, which is dried straight after water application. A steam cleaner utilises a machine which can suck up the dirty water which the hot water extracts. Your steam cleaning method works based on a mixture of chemicals and hot water which releases dirt or stains from the deeper depths of your carpet (which is then removed through suction).

  • It is perfect for stains that have been left to soak into the carpet
  • Utilises powerful chemicals to rid hidden stains
  • Provides an overall deeper clean
  • You can complete this method yourself with use of hire equipment

  • Can leave carpet wet for 2 hrs or more depending on the company (who will provide you an estimate)
  • If too much water is saturated into the carpet it can create bad hygiene
  • You’ll be unable to use the carpet area whilst it still remains wet

carpet cleaning 1

Dry Cleaning Carpet:

In comparison to your steam cleaning method the carpet drying (bonnet clean) does not use the same amount of water, instead it has a focus on utilising a chemical based cleaning technique. As moisture is beneficial to all carpet cleaning the dry carpet cleaning method does incorporate some water moisture, but mainly it sprays a chemical on the carpet which is scrubbed with a pad. Mixture of the chemicals and the pad fabric allow the dirt to be transferred onto the pad. However the carpet should also be vacuumed after the process to ensure all the grime that has turned into crystal powder, is effectively sucked up.

Chemical Forms: Granules (and in some cases your carpet cleaning professional will be able to utilise the ‘Foam Method’, which includes similar principles but utilises foam).

  • Most popular benefit is that it allows you to step onto your carpet immediately after application
  • Less water consumption (meaning no risk that your carpet will be over saturated)
  • Often cheaper

  • Doesn’t have the same effectiveness as steam cleaning for stubborn or liquid stains
  • It only really freshens the outer layer of the carpet (which can be appropriate if you have no real major stains)

dry carpet cleaning

Choosing out of these two main carpet cleaning methods may result in confusion, but with these basic bullet points and information you should be able to get an understanding what your carpet requires. It’s also best to talk in detail with your carpet cleaning professional before asking or accepting a specific method. In order to prevent the need for regular steam cleaning services you should always get on top of stains straight away, with off the shelf cleaning products, or basic carpet cleaning techniques (hot water and disinfectants).

It all comes down to your carpet type, specific stains, budget and more! Just make a general inquiry to begin your quest for the right carpet cleaning method!
