Cleaning Out Your Attic or Basement

When mentioning the words ‘attic’ or ‘basement’ there’s always a wide variety of reactions, but most commonly a reaction of dread. Over the years we’ve all been guilty of chucking every bit and bob into our attic or basement, especially during spring cleaning or after Christmas. Christmas can be the worst time when it comes to cramming belongings into the basement, we’re getting new dazzling items, then partially parting ways with old ones. Most people find it easier to pack away items rather than decide to throw things out, but eventually this formula leads to a greater problem.  As well as  building up clutter you are creating the perfect home for spiders, possums and even birds to hide.  To avoid calling a pest control expert as well as a skip bin hire company make sure you keep your attic clean!

attic

Whether you’ve decided you have no room left in your basement/attic, or simply looking to clean up major aspects of your home, the cleaning out of an attic space is unavoidable. Now how do you go about such a task? Many cleaning fanatics will have their own methods and plans when it comes to this daunting task, but there are some strong commonalities in which have been sorted out below. Make sure you take this type of job in phases and steps, all clearly laid out before beginning the process.

Pre Planning:

In order to conduct a successful clean-out it’s important you have strict planning in place, and clear idea of how to go about the process in a methodical way. Every basement or attic space is different, and utilised for different purposes, which is why everyone will have a modified plan. Despite the differences of attic spaces there are a few things you need to sort out and consider.

  • Do you have an idea what you’re going to find in the attic? If so then you’ll have an easier idea on how to organise.
  • Are you looking to re-arrange and re-package items? Or maybe you’re considering completely throwing out some items? You need to ensure there is a clear purpose to your cleaning.
  • Do you have all the right materials and resources to complete the job? Ensure you have extra boxes or options to relocate items during the process.
  • Is this job going to take place over a few days, weeks, or just one day? In most cases one day won’t be enough so make sure you have a good idea on time frame and not leave yourself to become stressed or rushed.
  • Are you seeking helpers? Is this a family task? Or maybe most of the items are yours and you’re going to take the journey alone?

Unpacking and Organising:

Once you have a clear pan and have answered some of the questions above then you’re ready to take on the physical labour. If you already have labelled boxes or items then you should probably leave the sorting of those items until last, as they’re already half way sorted. First you need to begin with boxes or storage that you’re unsure about, such as unlabeled boxes. Make sure you have on hand other boxes you can transfer the objects from the unmarked boxes into, as this will reduce clutter whilst sorting.

When completing this sorting task you should have clear categories in mind or written on your new empty boxes/storage, allowing you to quickly move the items. You will sometimes come across items that don’t fit into your categories, in which you can probably make an ‘other’ pile category. (Be careful not to fill this category with too many items)

After everything is sorted out into their prospective categories then you’re at the stage where some cut throat decisions will need to ensue. However the sorting out process may take longer than you think so ensure you’re not rushing this stage, as it will lead to hold ups further in the process.

storage

Disposal of Unwanted Items:

Now this is the stage where you look at all your categorised items and make a decision surrounding their fate. Some people may find this process a little difficult, and it can span over many days, it all depends on your attachment to the items. However if you’ve got no room left in your attic for any additional items then it’s probably wise to consider either public storage or throwing stuff out. You don’t want to leave yourself with no room to relocate belongings in the future.

Once you’ve sorted out which items you want to get rid of then place them all into large bin bags and relocate to your front door or any other space in your home that will ensure you remember to sort out their removal. Depending on how many items you need to get rid of and your own resources, you may require a skip bin, trailer, or ute.

Re-Designing Your Attic/Basement:

When you’re finally left with the all the items you’re happy with keeping then you need to re-organise the layout of your space. If you have less items then you’ll have a bonus amount of room left to move freely or to add more items. It’s important to find a layout the maximises your storage space and that suits the shape of the room. Look online or just invest in some spatially creative assistance to ensure your layout is perfect.

Tackling a big job like cleaning the attic or basement can be a major drainer, but not when you have a clear plan! Take whatever opportunity you can when finding time for this job because once you’ve settled on the work you’ll be 100% satisfied with the outcome. We all know major cleaning jobs can be boring and exhausting, but the end result always leaves you feeling accomplished.

Cleaning Mould Within The Home

What is mould?

Although most are aware of what mould looks like and the damage it can cause to homes, we’re not all knowledgeable on the finer details. Mould in its most basic form is an organism which grows and breaks down organic material.

Furthermore there are many different mould varieties, but together they’re referred to as fungi. You may recognise the term fungi when talking about health and the body, as everyone at some point can be susceptible to fungi.

Moisture is the main source of growth for mould, along with a few other materials. When most people come across mould it’s directly related moisture, and this is how it arises within many properties.

Cleaning Method and Solutions:

What type of solution?

Many DIY specialists suggest their own solutions when it comes to cleaning mould off walls or surfaces, but there is a consistency in popularity of some basic solutions/mixes.

  • Baking Soda & Vinegar & Water
  • Baking Soda & Detergent & Water
  • Vinegar & Water

You’ll find these are the basic home solutions created by home owners but there are also off the shelf products that will be able to provide similar results.

How do I effectively apply my solution?

With all solutions it’s best to utilise a spray bottle and old rag as your basic tools. If possible you should attempt to find a scrubbing brush to assist with the more stubborn mould.

You should then spray your solution directly on the mould and wipe away if possible, repeat this until you’re recognising some results.  After you’re satisfied with the surface make sure you deliver a last wipe over with some warm water.

When completing your scrubbing motion on tough mould you should be careful to ensure you’re not causing damage to the actual surface.

Mould Species:

Here is a list of the most common identified mould within the home:

Alternaria:

  • Damp Places (leaking pipes, showers, carpets)
  • Outdoors and indoors
  • Can cause allergic symptoms and onset of asthma
  • Greater risk to elderly, children and those with respiratory issues.

Penicillium:

  • Found in carpet, wallpaper, fabrics and insulation
  • Can lead to sinus infections, lung inflammation and more
  • A common type of mould and spreads easily

Stachybotrys Chartarum:

  • Grows where there is a constant level of moisture
  • Can cause fatigue, depression, asthma attacks, sinus infections etc.

mould

Should I utilise DIY methods for mould removal or enlist a professional cleaner?

You should only complete DIY mould removal on small areas of mould growth. If your home has become overrun by mould in several places then it’s important to consider environmental changes and contact a professional local cleaner.

Although it’s impossible to change the weather conditions in your area there are many ways to inhibit or protect your home against mould. Living in areas prone to humidity should urge you to look into mould prevention in a more serious manner.

How to Maintain a Clean Business Office

Maintaining the ideals and image of your business is of one of the most important aspects of running a company. Whether you offer outstanding services or have a great product for a client can be ruined through poor presentation. If the majority of business dealings are conducted within your office or conference room it’s important that you have this area in impeccable condition.

Perhaps you already have in-house cleaning roster that incorporates the joint effort of your staff? Or maybe you have an outsourced office cleaning business already on the case?

As long as you have a system that allows full coverage of your entire workspace then the system itself doesn’t particularly need altering. However in some cases plans and rosters don’t end up working out smoothly, which is why it’s good to have some basic information or advice on the subject.

Areas Of Focus When Undertaking Office Cleaning Duties:

offices

Eating Arrangements:

Are you noticing a lot of food remnants lying around the office space? Perhaps there needs to a more disciplined system for eating introduced within the workplace. As a manager you can enforce some rule, or simply spread some awareness on the topic of clean eating.

If you’re a worker then perhaps you can look at alternative arrangements than curling up behind your desk at lunch time. Not only will you feel more relaxed away from a computer screen, you’ll also find the crumbs no longer sit in the crevices of your keyboard.

Regular Cleaning of Break Room or Tea Room:

Without a doubt there needs to be a focus upon the kitchen area and tea room, as this is the central cave of food habits. As a manager you should ensure that there are adequate cleaning products in the kitchen, allowing all employees to regularly utilise these when cleaning dishes. Keeping on top of all cleaning product supplies is of major importance when attempting to keep a consistently hygienic environment. Furthermore having firm kitchen maintenance rules in place is a good idea when you’re dealing with a substantial amount of employees. Ensuring everyone follows these rules is another obstacle when coordinating office cleaning tasks.

Garbage and Rubbish:

If you want to ensure that your workplace is maintaining an overall clean and odour free environment then there is no question that a rubbish schedule needs to be in place. Whether maintenance involves a roster for clearing up individual bins once a week, or leaving it up to employees when it comes to rubbish day, there needs to be a consensus.

If you’re an employee then it’s wise to ensure that you’re not leaving old fruit or odorous food to hang around in your bin for too long. Make the effort to take care of this particular rubbish even if it requires emptying your bin into the outside bin more than once a week.

Keeping Dust Free Benches and Surfaces:

Without knowing it your workplace contains endless amounts of dust molecules, all resting on top of flat surfaces throughout the entire office. Depending on the structure of your office and atmosphere you’ll notice that dust piles up more significantly on certain surfaces. Monitoring dust on all hard surfaces is a must in terms of presentation and hygiene. Nothing is worse than a client’s eyes falling upon a clump of dust sitting on top of your TV monitor or chairs.

You can list a million different areas of the office that need to be regularly cleaned and maintained, including the bathrooms. In most cases it’s more cost and time effective to utilise professional office cleaning services for the workplace.

If you’re looking for a team who regularly take care of these duties you can contact Office Cleaning Campbelltown- Freshwater Office Cleaning.

Exterior House Washing and The Pressure Cleaner

When people think about cleaning the home it’s usually regarding the interior, however it’s also important to remember the exterior. Just like the inside of your home the outside of the house picks up dirt and grime, even to a much higher extent. Due the differing weather conditions the outside of your property faces a storm of different particles every day. Whether the winter chill increases mildew, or a harsh storm causes mud splatter, it’s unlikely your exterior will be in perfect condition all year round.

Depending on the type of exterior your home is made from will determine how the weather or time affects it’s appearance. However over time you may notice that certain areas of the exterior will develop build ups of different grime and mould. It’s important that if you want to maintain and preserve the condition of the exterior that you place aside some time for cleaning. On average you should attempt to clean this area of your home twice a year depending on your own judgement and rain levels.

house

With the introduction of the ‘Pressure Washer’ you can now easily get rid of stubborn grime and provide an intensive all-round exterior clean. Most people swear by the results of any pressure washer and even own their own. However you can also hire out these cleaning machines through hardware or cleaning stores.

Pressure Washing Guidelines and Tips:

  • Your first step is quite obvious, you’ll need to either purchase one, or hire.
  • Before you begin any pressure washing you need to ensure that you fully protect areas of your exterior that could be damaged. One of the most important areas to cover is anything electrical, for obvious reasons, don’t try mixing electricity with water. You should also protect any plants, ornaments and anything that you don’t think can handle the strength of pressurized water.

Tip: Don’t use your pressure washer to clean aluminum or painted areas, they will be damaged. However if the point of your work is to remove old paint from the exterior then you can ignore this handy hint.

  • If you can remove any mildew or grime manually before using the pressure washer then you should. Sometimes a pressure washer won’t be able to completely get rid of certain grime or mould that’s hardened onto the wall. Simply loosen any of this grime with a scrubbing brush, or dip it in water if it doesn’t work.
  • Depending on the pressure washer you can either use plain water to clean the surface, or with some you can utilise a cleaning solution. It’s best to strictly follow the instruction manual provided with the machine.
  • Hook up the pressure to the garden hose!
  • Begin cleaning on a low pressure and from the top of the walls, then work the motion down to the bottom. It’s important to set your pressure washer low to ensure that the force isn’t too strong and immediately damages your exterior. Turn it up to a higher PSI (strength) once you’ve tested it on a low PSI.

pressure washer

If you don’t own a pressure washer then you can still clean the exterior home manually, however it will be a lot more time consuming and difficult. Below is a few tips on what cleaning solutions to use on different surfaces.

You will need to have a few different tools and equipment to manually clean your exterior:

  • Wire Scrubbing Brush
  • Large Sponge
  • Hose and Hose Attachment

Masonry, Wood, Painted Surfaces:

These are particularity fragile surfaces and you should use a mixture of 1tsp of sugar soap.

Weathered Wood:

Use organic oxalic acid and a scrubbing brush to prevent any damage.

cleaning outside

Next time you’re cleaning your home remember to think about the exterior, it’s a relatively easy job that only needs completion a few times a year. With high pressure washers and a range of effective cleaning solutions now available you don’t need to spend time working out any complex details.

Or if you want to be sure that your exterior is cleaned with precision, or if your exterior is a complex structure, try contacting cleaning professionals.

Window Cleaning Tools

If you’ve noticed that your home or office windows are looking a bit dirty and ugly then it’s probably time to provide them some cleaning maintenance. It’s likely that you’ve cleaned these windows before, but perhaps you haven’t got the results you desired? Finding out additional information about specific  resources and equipment can really assist with reaching higher quality results. However some people may find that endless window cleaning duties are tiresome and too difficult to get outstanding results, which is why there are professional window cleaning companies available.

window cleaning

Whether or not you choose to go at it alone, or enlist in the help of a professional window cleaner (which can be any general cleaner or bond cleaning specialist), there is still information that you may be interested in knowing. With a bit of research and tests you may be able to find the approach that best suits your requirements.

Equipment and Tools:

Squeegee:

Probably your most important tool when thinking about conducting window cleaning duties yourself is the Squeegee, a utensil that contains a handle, rubber blade material, and a sponge type material on the other side. Many people may already own a squeegee as it is common tool for cleaning glass surfaces.

As an over the counter product there are many types available, if you want to achieve quality streak free results then it’s vital that you buy one of a good standard. Squeegee’s are generally cheap but it’s probably best not to go with one that’s too cheap and looks a bit fragile.

You can also get a whole range of different sizes in this product so make sure you select one that can cover the a good width of your windows (providing you less work).

squeegee

Scraping Blade:

Sometimes cleaning windows with soft materials won’t be able to provide the results you desire, especially if you’re trying to rid of stubborn muck that’s stuck on your windows. With the help of a scraper tool you can remove all stubborn stains such as paints or varnishes.

Most quality scraper tools will come with replacement blades, which allows you to keep the blades in the best condition for use. Without a sharp blade you can risk damaging the window because you will need to press harder to remove the stains.

You must be careful when utilising the scraper as it is an open blade and may cause damage to your windows if you’re not steady handed. Furthermore a scraper can also cause you or someone else harm if handled incorrectly.

Cleaning Bucket and Cleaning Mixture:

For obvious reasons you will need a trustworthy and comfortable bucket to hold the liquid you’re using for your windows. Make sure the bucket is easy to handle and won’t cause any issues when cleaning your windows, however most buckets should be fine for this task.

As for what type of detergent or cleaner you utilise for window cleaning, there are many opinions, and it’s hard to determine one that stands out dramatically among the rest.

Some cleaning mixtures and ideas include:

  •  Vinegar & Water Solution
  • Dish washing detergent, vinegar, water
  • Water, vinegar, cornstarch
  • Pre-Packaged Window Cleaning Products

Poles:

Extending poles are the best tools for cleaning windows that are high and unreachable at normal height. Like squeegee utensils you can find a range of different extension poles, ranging in brand and size.

cleaning

Micro- fibre Cloth:

A micro-fibre cloth is handy cleaning tool because it acts a primer for cleaning windows, it can swiftly pick up any dust or surface dust before you add any water or cleaning mixture. It’s important to wipe away any surface grime or dust before an intense clean of your windows, it prevents dust being moved around on the glass without being picked up.

These are some of the many tools and resources utilised when conducting window cleaning. It’s important you’re prepared with the right equipment if you want to get satisfying results. Otherwise you can always look into contacting a cleaning professional. Most professional  cleaning companies will have their own equipment, and in most cases is the best possible technology.

coffee

Prevention of Stains:

If you’re lucky enough to find the stain right when it occurs from a spill or dropped liquid then you can prevent any major stubborn stain from forming on your carpet pile. As soon you see the spill or mess then you should get a washer or paper towel to blot the stain carefully.

Your instinct may be to wipe at the stain or scrub it, however you shouldn’t go with this instinct. If you do scrub at your mess or liquid then you can further spread the stain to other areas of the carpet, or ruin the condition of your carpet.

Simply blot the carpet with your paper towel, and if it’s not completely soaked up into the towel then get a new towel and blot again. You can do the same with a sponge but make sure you thoroughly rinse the sponge before trying to soak up the mess a second time.

Important Info: Some products and chemicals may damage your carpet depending on the type of carpet. Carpet that is made of natural material (wool, sisal etc) will be damaged by liquid stain removal techniques. If you’re not sure what your carpet type consists of, maybe do some research , ask around, or call a professional cleaner.

Some Common Stain Types:

Gravy, Mud, Milk:

Method 1: Use soda water and spray it on the stain. Then find a mild carpet shampoo product and use a sponge to soak of the lifted stain.

Method 2: 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar and mix with about 4 cups of water. Use a sponge and gently douse the stain, then soak up what is lifted from the surface.

Chocolate:

chocolate

Method : If you’ve caught these on time you can scrape up most of the gunk, leaving you with less mess to soak. Utilise alcohol or surgical spirit and apply a bit of this on a cloth, then place on top of the stain. Press lightly with a spoon or utensil to try and soak up as much of the stain as possible, then remove cloth.

Creating a homemade solution is easy, simply mix a mild carpet shampoo (1/4 of teaspoon) with a litre of water (warm).  Apply a little bit of solution with a cloth and lay over stain, then proceed to dab the  stain, while also rinsing cloth when moisture builds.

Rinse the stain with plain warm water and then re-assess after seeing the results. Sometimes the results may vary depending on how much chocolate has been spilled, your carpet type and more.

Glue:

glue

Method 1: Find a cloth or old material and dampen with an alcohol solution, then gently press onto the stain. You’ll begin to see the stain moisten and then at your own discretion wipe the glue off the carpet. Continue this process depending on the results and the amount of glue.

Method 2: Create a mix of a 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and about 3 cups of water (cold). With a cloth dip into the solution and blot the stain. Continue to blot until the glue moistens and lifts from carpet, then wipe away with dry cloth. You should then rinse the affected area with sponge dipped in plain cool water.

stain removal

As with most stain removal it’s an advantageous to act as soon as the spill or mess occurs, which is not always practical, but will provide more successful cleaning results. However there are some cases where tackling stains is best left up to professional carpet cleaners. If you contact a professional carpet specialist they will be able to assess the severity of the stain and work out what type of treatment will work best with your carpet type. You can call the team at Carpet Cleaning Wollongong- SMS Carpet Cleaning and get professional advice you need.

Do your best to keep on top of carpet stains before they threaten to provide long lasting discolouration!

Carpet Cleaning For Stairs : Techniques and Tips

Do you have a double storey home? Or perhaps you just have a split level home? Either way you’ll know the burden of cleaning these stairs if they’re carpeted. If you have a lot of stairs or a long staircase within your home then cleaning may become a dreaded and often shunned task. However just like all carpet within your home, you can’t go without cleaning. Perhaps you’d like some tips and tricks when it comes to cleaning your carpeted stairs? Or maybe it’s just easier to to hire a professional carpet cleaner to handle the job?

If you’d like to handle the stairs yourself then check out some tips and tricks below! You’ll find these methods quite handy and successful.

carpet cleaning

Tips and Methods:

  • Due to the shape of stairs dust accumulates in the crevices and corners, making the cleaning job that bit harder. In order to get out the more ingrained dust and dirt a good idea is to utilise a hard brush broom. You should do this before you begin any wet cleaning process. Simply use some force and brush each step a few times to dig out the more stubborn dirt.
  • A vacuum cleaner is a must when it comes to cleaning your carpet stairs, as the suction should get rid of any loose dirt. You should use a vacuum in conjunction with a hard brush as the vacuum will pick up that loose dirt that’s been picked up by the brush. A small hand vacuum cleaner will be of more use and easier to handle than trying to lug a larger vacuum up your stairs. However you will find that some vacuums have attachments that can also make this process a lot easier.

After you have completed dry cleaning tasks of your stairs, the next thing is to provide your stairs a more intensive clean, with already labelled products, or your own shampoo recipe.

Shampoo and Carpet Cleaning Mix:

  • Baking Soda
  • Hot Water
  • Liquid Soap
  • Peppermint Oil
  • Distilled Vinegar

You can find a few different variations of DIY shampoo mixes when you’re looking online, so why not have a browse and find one that you think you’d like to work with, although there isn’t much a of way to determine the best home made concoction. Most should work if you mix the right way.

  • When shampooing and vacuuming your carpet you should always start from the highest stair and work your way down, which avoids you having to walk down the stairs to get to the bottom (which will ruin your hard work).
  • After the shampooing process you will need to dry the stairs as quickly as possible to ensure the moisture doesn’t produce mould or any contaminants. If you have a wet/dry vacuum then this will obviously be the most suitable option for drying fast. However not everyone can get their hands on this machine so the next best option is to use towels. You’ll need to put a bit of time into drying the carpeted stairs with towels, as the towels will not be as absorbent as your wet/dry vacuum.
  • After your carpet is completely dry you can do last minute cleaning if you think this is necessary.

vaccumm

Make sure you make a habit of cleaning your carpeted stairs regularly if they’re used a lot, otherwise you should only need to clean them every 4-5 months. If you don’t want to tackle the job yourself then you should find a local carpet cleaner who can take on this duty.

Graffiti Removal ? Your Options…

If you’ve been unlucky enough to have your property or home covered by some distasteful graffiti art then you’re going to want to get rid of it straight away. You can either try your luck with some DIY methods of graffiti removal, or you can hire a professional exterior cleaner. Most cleaning companies will offer services specialising in graffiti removal so it’s a fairly easy service to organise.

Your decision regarding hiring a professional or doing it yourself is personal to your own lifestyle, if you want a quick solution then the obvious choice is to hire a graffiti removal professional. Or if you need to save some cash then your best choice will be looking at the DIY methods, however even if you choose to clean the graffiti yourself it may not get the same results as someone with expertise.

graffiti 3

Some DIY Methods:

Pressure Washer:

If you’re looking at removing chalk graffiti then you’ll find it a lot easier than spray paint. Utilising a water pressure system should do the trick. However you should only set the pressure washer to a lower pressure, and do not place a narrow attachment on the end. You’ll need a wide spread amount of water to get the graffiti off the surface without leaving uneven streaks left.  It’s also important that if you’re getting graffiti off wood that you be careful not to damage the wood with the pressure of the water. You can purchase pressure washers from your local hardware or trade store. Karcher is a widely used water pressure system on the market.

Paint Thinners and Chemical Methods:

Another easily accessible and cheaper option is to buy some chemicals that will remove graffiti. You will easily be able to find paint thinner, mineral spirits, acetone, and even products made for graffiti removal. You need to be careful when using chemicals as the strength can damage the surface, especially if your graffiti is already on a painted surface. However this method should be relatively effective on metal surfaces and glass. As these chemicals are easily bought, and inexpensive, this method is common. Although you should always try and utilise basic water pressure techniques before applying chemicals.

paint thinner   acetone

Re-Painting:

If you don’t want the hassle of removing the graffiti, or you’re struggling to get any results from other methods, you can always go with the option of re-painting. When you decide to re-paint over the graffiti make sure you’re looking at the colours already on the surface, and get some advice on what sort of colours will be able to eradicate the graffiti in full. Usually you’re going to need to go with a darker colour, or complete several layers of a light colour. In all circumstances this option should be your last when it comes to treating unwanted graffiti, as you’re really only masking the mess.

The Professional:

Sometimes you can utilise all the DIY methods in the world and still not be able to get rid of graffiti. If you want an easy solution that’s hassle free, you can almost always get the right results by hiring a professional.
